Wine Day Trips from Madrid: Regions, Prices & How to Choose

You don't need to go far from Madrid for great wine. For an easy day out, shared small-group wine tours run Monday to Saturday to the Tajo Valley (6 h, €165 per person) or Ribera del Duero (11 h, €198 per person), with three wineries, tastings and transport included. For a private day built around you, the Wine Experience VIP picks you up at your hotel and takes you to boutique wineries near Madrid: one winery (approx. 4–5 hours, from €252 per person), two wineries (approx. 6–7 hours, from €417 per person) or two wineries plus sightseeing (approx. 10 hours, on request).
Wine country around Madrid
Madrid is surrounded by wine country. Within easy reach of the city there are vineyards in the Tajo Valley and towards Toledo, Segovia and Castilla-La Mancha — the largest wine-growing region in Spain — so you can be tasting in a cellar a couple of hours after breakfast. Further north, about two hours away, lies Ribera del Duero, one of the country's most prestigious red-wine appellations.
The grapes to know
- Tempranillo— Spain's signature red grape: cherry, plum and, with age, leather and spice. In Ribera del Duero it is known as Tinto Fino, and in La Mancha as Cencibel.
- Garnacha — juicy, red-fruited and aromatic, at its best from old vines in the hills around Madrid and Toledo.
- International varieties — some modern estates also work with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot for elegant, structured blends.

- Winter: quiet, bare vines and cosy cellars, with fewer visitors.
