Toledo or Segovia? How to Choose Your Day Trip from Madrid

By Wiwan Travel · Updated

Toledo's old town and Alcázar on the hill above the River Tagus
In short

Choose Toledofor a medieval hilltop city shaped by Christian, Muslim and Jewish cultures, with El Greco's masterpieces and views over the River Tagus — about an hour south of Madrid. Choose Segovia for a 2,000-year-old Roman aqueduct, a fairytale Alcázar and roast suckling pig — about 1 h 15 min north-west, across the mountains. They lie in opposite directions, so pick one per day rather than rushing both. Our private Toledo or Segovia day trips include transport from Madrid, a bilingual guide and an itinerary built around you.

Toledo: the city of three cultures

For centuries Christians, Muslims and Jews lived side by side in Toledo, and you can still read that history in its streets. The whole old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, wrapped on three sides by a bend of the River Tagus.

Good to know: the old town is steep and cobbled, so wear comfortable shoes. Summer afternoons are very hot, so an early start pays off.

Segovia: Roman giant and fairytale castle

Segovia sits at around 1,000 metres at the foot of the Guadarrama mountains, and its old town and aqueduct are also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It feels airier than Toledo, with big landmarks linked by a lively main street.

Good to know: Segovia is noticeably cooler than Madrid — welcome in summer, and worth a warm layer in winter.

Can you do Toledo and Segovia in one day?

Technically yes, but we don't recommend it — and we don't offer it. Toledo is south of Madrid and Segovia is north-west, about two hours apart by road. Doing both means most of the day in a car and only a quick glimpse of each city. Both deserve a full day: pick the one that suits you best, or book them on two separate days.

Short on time? El Escorial, the royal monastery-palace about an hour from Madrid, works well as a half-day trip.
